With an estimated 3,579,212 residents in 2006 and a land area of 68,667 square miles, Oklahoma is the 28th most populous and 20th-largest state. Its name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people", and is known informally by its nickname, The Sooner State. Formed from Indian Territory on November 16, 1907, Oklahoma was the 46th state to enter the union. Its citizens are known known as Oklahomans, and the state's capital and largest city is Oklahoma City.

In descending order of population, Oklahoma's largest cities in 2007 were: Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Broken Arrow, Lawton, Edmond, Midwest City, Moore, Enid, and Stillwater.

Western ranchers, native American tribes, southern settlers, and eastern oil barons have shaped the state's cultural predisposition, while its citizens stereotypically display traits of friendliness and generosity, with the Catalogue for Philanthropy ranking Oklahomans 4th in the nation for overall generosity.

Six golden brown crosses, Native American symbols for stars, are spaced on the shield. The blue field represents the first official flag flown by any Native American Nation, the Choctaw flag of the American Civil War.
